Course Introduction

Electricity is a familiar and necessary part of everyday life, but every year accidents at work involving electric shock or burns are reported to the authorities.

There are simple precautions that can be taken to significantly reduce the risk of electrical injury to you, and others around you, when working with, or near electricity.

In this electricity at work e-learning course learners will gain the knowledge and understanding required to ensure they can act safely when working with electricity as well as being able to apply principles that will help reduce the likelihood of accidents occurring in the workplace.

Module 1 – Introduction to electricity at work
  • List two of the main causes of electrical accidents
  • Describe the types of injuries caused by electrical accidents
  • Answer simple questions about working with electricity such as what is a ‘safe voltage’
  • Explain what to do if you see someone who is not working safely.
Module 2 – Reducing risk 
  • Describe your responsibility to you and your colleagues with regards to health and safety.
  • Give examples of high risk environments
  • Give an example of equipment which has heavy usage in a benign environment
  • Describe the simple visual check they can make to electrical equipment
  • Explain what an RCD is and how it works
  • Explain ways of working with reduced voltage
  • Explain why you shouldn’t tamper with equipment which is locked and tagged
  • Describe special care that should be taken working near power lines
  • Explain what should be done with damaged or defective equipment.
Module 3 – Portable equipment
  • Explain why portable equipment is particularly vulnerable
  • Give an example of a piece of equipment which can damage its own cable
  • Describe higher risk environments for portable equipment
  • Explain what a PAT test is and who should carry them out.
Module 4 – In an emergency
  • Explain why electrical accidents can be dangerous for those trying to help.
  • Describe what to do if they encounter someone suffering from an electric shock.
  • Explain why it’s necessary to keep a safe distance from incidents involving high voltages.
  • Describe what you can do if they find someone experiencing a low voltage shock.
  • Explain three things that should happen after an incident accident involving electricity.
Module 5 – Assessment and CPD certificate
